That’s why I created this blog about Pro-Line Comb-Thru.
I love the sheen. I love the shine, not too greasy. Pro-Line Comb-Thru—these waves are mine! Whoever created the packaging on this did a great job. I look for the black, yellow, and aqua container. That is my wave and styling gel. I’ve been buying it for over 10 years now, I’m sure—and only now have I really paid attention to the name.
And the reason why? Because I’ve been using it more than ever—and I really gave it a hard job…and it has comb through. I mean came through with flying colors. Did you catch the double pun? I gave it a hard job? I promise you the puns were not intended. Scouts honor.

The Nappy Head Back Story (as promised)
So this is my unhappy nappy head back story. The date was August of 2025. I had just got my son into a Christian school just in time for school to start back up. It was a blessing. But the problem is the hard work starts now. His school tuition is $800 a month… (and that doesn’t count the “surprise fees” and the “oh yeah he needs this too” list).
I was already a bit depressed. Home life was tough and complex. I would have never thought that in early August I would not get a haircut again the whole year of 2025. But that is what happened.
Before I knew it I had a big problem on my hands. Or in my hands if I ever touched my hair.
Today is January 30th and I haven’t gotten a haircut in 6 months since August of last year.
Nappy Head Redemption Story
In early January I went to the store with my family to shop at my favorite place—Walmart. The one on Military Highway.
I went to the store to buy a hair pic, a comb and some hair gel. Until I remembered… no, I already had the hair gel at home. It’s been one of my favorites for years. I tell my son to use it on his hair to keep his hair looking fresh in between haircuts. He’s a teenager so he has to stay fly—you know what I’m saying? Sorry for the soul man talk but I’m kind of feeling it right now… you dig? Right on!
As soon as I picked up that hair pic and the comb this man came around the corner so fast he would make Bruce Lee proud… (listen… in my mind that’s exactly what happened).
He took the hair pic in one hand, laid hands on my nappy head with the other, and prayed over my naps:
“Good Lord in heaven… this man has a whole lot of knots in his head… but I believe he has some Pro-Line Comb-Thru at home. Lord help him untie these nappy knots… and give him some waves.”
I could feel it. I opened my eyes to thank that great man… but he was gone. (Again—this is how redemption stories work.)
When I got home, it was time to get busy.
How long did it take to unknot my head?
About 4–5 days to feel a real shift.
Around day 3, I noticed something special happening.
By day 7, I could put my fingers in my hair and it was like… whoa—this is so much better.
And then the afro shape really came. Instead of having the nappy hair look I had before… now I had the nice looking afro look and I haven’t even got my haircut.
Why it “Pro – Line Comb – Thru” works (Ingredients)
Retail listings commonly show a base built for slip + shine + hold:
- Water (Aqua): the base of the formula.
- Glycerin: a humectant—helps attract moisture so hair feels less dry and more flexible. Walmart even calls it out as “enriched with glycerin.”
- Propylene Glycol: another humectant/solvent that helps distribute ingredients evenly.
- Dimethicone / PEG-12 Dimethicone: silicones that can boost slip (less friction = easier detangling) and add shine.
- Lanolin / PEG-75 Lanolin: an emollient that can help with softness and sheen (some people are sensitive to lanolin—patch test if you’re unsure).
- Carbomer / Sodium Carbomer: thickener/gelling agent—helps give the gel structure and hold.
- Vitamin E (often listed as Tocopherol Acetate): commonly used as a conditioning/antioxidant ingredient in hair products; Walmart notes “Vitamin E.”
- Fragrance + fragrance allergens (like linalool/limonene, etc.): smells nice, but can bother sensitive scalps.
Translation: this is a “slip + sheen” gel. If your hair is dry, knotted, and acting like it pays rent to be difficult… slip matters.
How I’d use it (especially if you’re trying to detangle, not just style)
Retail directions are simple: apply a small amount, work through hair, style as desired.
My practical version (for thick/coily hair days):
- Lightly dampen hair (not dripping).
- Apply a small amount of Comb-Thru to hands.
- Work it in section by section (don’t try to fight your whole head at once).
- Use a wide-tooth comb or pick first, then refine with a brush.
- If you’re building waves: brush → durag → let it set.
Pro tip: If you use a lot of silicone-based products, a gentle clarifying wash every so often can keep buildup from stealing your shine.
The Pros / The Cons
What I love
- Shine without feeling drenched in grease.
- Slip that helps when your hair is tangled and stubborn.
- Works for that natural/wavy/textured look.
What to watch for
- If your scalp is sensitive, fragrance ingredients can be a factor.
- If you overload product, you can get buildup (that’s not just Pro-Line—that’s gel life).
My Future Plans Using Pro-Line Comb-Thru
So when I go to get my haircut again, I could just ask for an edge up… “That’ll be $80 sir…” 😂
But seriously: I might shape it up and go full afro look. Or get a brush cut level and grow it back the right way next time—taking care of my hair and using Pro-Line Comb-Thru all the way through.
